Matthew E. Morgan is a therapist, author, and speaker exploring how story, identity, and fandom culture intersect with mental health. Through his presentations at TAGGS and his writing, he highlights the ways geek culture can become a meaningful space for healing and connection.

Rebellion and Resistance: Cosplayers Find Hope in Fandom

2026 Presentation:

Learning Objectives:

  1. EXPLAIN three psychological mechanisms (embodiment, narrative reframing, social connectedness) through which cosplay enhances wellbeing.

  2. IDENTIFY ethical and clinical considerations when integrating cosplay into therapy or coaching.

  3. FACILITATE a short embodied compassion exercise to support client self-concept and emotional resilience.

  4. DESIGN a plan to incorporate fandom-based identity work into clinical or educational practice.

Cosplay is more than a costume; it’s an act of rebellion against shame. In a world that tells us to hide, fandom invites us to be seen. Through the power of character embodiment, many neurodivergent and trauma-impacted individuals find courage, belonging, and self-acceptance by stepping into the armor of their favorite heroes.

In this interactive 90-minute session, licensed therapist and geek therapy practitioner Matthew E. Morgan explores the psychology of cosplay as a modern expression of resilience. Drawing on research with other cosplayers (including lived experience) and combining this with research in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Narrative therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), participants will learn how cosplay fosters identity integration, community connection, and hope.

The session includes guided reflective practices, inviting attendees to experience how character embodiment can cultivate empathy and self-compassion.

Whether you’re a clinician, educator, or passionate fan, this workshop will help you see cosplay not just as play, but as a profound act of healing and resistance.
